After a long New Hampshire winter, there is joy in watching the snow finally melt—until it turns into mud season. You know the drill: slushy driveways, soggy boots, and the endless battle against tracked-in grit. That’s when we start getting ready to hit the road south, dreaming of sunshine, palm trees, and a break from the brown and gray. First, we button things up at home, pack the motorhome, load the dog and cat, and point ourselves toward Hilton Head Island for a few weeks of rest and rejuvenation.

First Stops: Family Time
We made a couple of stops at our parents’ homes on the way south—an easy and familiar part of the route. It’s always good to catch up, share a meal, and spend a little time before the miles really start to add up. Nothing fancy, just a nice way to ease into the trip.
Boondocking Bliss on the Delmarva
Next up: a Boondockers Welcome stay that turned out to be a highlight of the trip. Tucked away on the marshes of the Delmarva Peninsula, this stop was everything we needed after a few busy days on the road. The setting was serene and private, with sweeping views of the marsh and barely a sound aside from birdsong and the occasional whisper of wind through the grasses. We watched the sky shift from soft gold to darkness, and it felt like the whole world had quieted down just for us. No noise, no distractions—just peace. The kind that seeps into your bones.
A Buzzing Night at Dirtbag Ales
From quietude to community spirit—we made our next overnight stop at Dirtbag Ales in Hope Mills, North Carolina, a Harvest Hosts location that was absolutely alive with energy. This place is clearly beloved by locals and for good reason. The beer and cocktails were excellent, the crowd was friendly, and the entire space had that fun, unpolished charm that makes you want to stay a while. Live music floated through the air, food trucks served up delicious bites, and families and dogs gathered under twinkling string lights. There were a few other RVers parked for the evening, and we had a nice conversation with fellow travelers enjoying the same lively vibe. It was the kind of night that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled onto something special.
Hilton Head Island at Last
Finally, we rolled onto Hilton Head Island, welcomed by sunshine, salt air, and the promise of downtime. We set up camp, unfolded the chairs, and let out a collective sigh.
That first deep breath of coastal air after months of winter is rejuvenating. We’re leaning into rest—bike rides under moss-draped oaks, beach walks with the dog, fresh seafood dinners, and lazy afternoons spent doing absolutely nothing.
This annual escape from mud season isn’t just about fleeing the mess—it’s about chasing beauty, stillness, and connection. From family homes to marshy hideaways and beer gardens buzzing with life, the journey south reminded us just how good life on the road can be.
Here’s to sunshine, slow living, and the return of color to our world.
